KHARTOUM, July 16 (Xinhua) -- A peacekeeper belonging to the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has been seriously wounded after he was shot near a mission camp in South Darfur State, Sudan Tribune reported Monday.

"At 2:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) Monday, an unidentified person fired a shot at an Egyptian peacekeeper at the night guard tower of a mission headquarters, seriously injuring him," quoting unnamed UNAMID official source.

The source added that the wounded peacekeeper has been transported to Khartoum due to his critical condition. An emergency meeting was later held to discuss the incident and future risks involved.

So far no comment has been made by the mission's headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur State.

The mission's peacekeepers in Darfur have experienced several attacks by unidentified groups since its deployment, with a death toll now over 60. Since 2017, however, attacks against UNAMID peacekeepers have greatly declined.
