Russia dominates first day of FINA junior artistic swimming worlds

BUDAPEST, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Russia dominated the first day of the 16th FINA World Junior Artistic Swimming Championships here on Wednesday in the solo free and solo technical categories.

In the solo technical final, Young star Varvara Subbotina from Russia triumphed with a stunning performance worth 92.6551 points. She was followed by Ukrainian competitor Marta Fiedina who scored 88.6030 which brought her the silver medal. Japanese Mana Fujiwara came third with 87.9752 points.

The solo free final followed the exact same pattern regarding the first three places. Varvara Subbotina triumphed with a breathtaking performance worth 93.5667 points. The silver went to Marta Fiedina who scored 90.7667. Bronze medalist Mana Fujiwara obtained 88.3333 points.

Some 300 competitors of 40 countries and regions and their coaches have come to Budapest to vie for the 9 world titles.

The medals are up for grab in 9 events - free combination, technical and free routines for solo, duets and teams events. For the first time ever, the world champions in the mixed duet (both free and technical routines) will be crowned.

The championships will end on July 22.
