KINSHASA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people died Tuesday in a boat accident on the Congo River in Kisangani, Tshopo province, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the governor of the province said Friday.

In an brief interview with Xinhua's correspondent in Kinshasa, the governor of Tshopo province, Jean Ilongo Tokole, said 34 people remained missing and there were over 100 survivors.

Tokole said night navigation on this course had been suspended "until further notice."

The accident that occurred 200 km from Kisangani involved a boat that was reportedly carrying passengers and goods from Lukutu to Kisangani at night without light.

The DRC regularly records accidents on the river, shores and lakes as a result of poor boat conditions or overladen boats.
