Uganda ready for 2018 Woodball World Cup

KAMPALA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Uganda will be spearheaded by women star player Lilian Zawedde to take part in the 8th Woodball World Cup in Chiangdao, Thailand.

The team will depart on Monday for the World Cup, which runs July 24-29th.

"Our team has prepared well enough and we are determined to perform much better this time. We have gained a lot of experience over the years which puts us top in Africa as well," Collins Ssemanda, Secretary of the Uganda Woodball Federation (UWBF) told Xinhua.

Uganda has previously competed in four editions of the Woodball World Cup in 2010 (Thailand), 2012 (Malaysia), 2014 (China) and 2016 (South Korea).

Zawedde and Onesmus Atamba won the mixed doubles title at the 2016 World Cup, while the men's team finished 3rd overall.

"I am determined to go all out and try to win a gold medal in the individual event and also propel the team to perform well in the other team events," Zawedde said.

The star player made it clear that playing at the World Cup is the best thing for a player. "We shall be determined to give our best for Uganda and carry the flag high," added Zawedde.

Other teams expected to compete in the Woodball World Cup include China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Oman, Peru, Singapore, Thailand, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Women:Joan Mukoova, Joyce Nalubega, Lilian Zawedde, Sophia Namuddu, Charity Nagaba, Elizabeth Nambeguya, Florence Mukoya, Nenise Pulkenia Nanjeru.
