NEW DELHI, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Authorities issued a flood alert in low-lying areas of Delhi Saturday following intermittent rains that pushed water level above danger mark in Yamuna river, officials said.

The water level in the river increased and breached the danger mark level after water was released from neighboring Haryana's Hathnikund in the morning.

"The Yamuna level in Delhi crossed the warning mark at 10:00 a.m. (local time) and the water level was recorded at 205.06 metres," an official from Irrigation and Flood Control Department said. "All the concerned officials have been asked to remain alert and take steps to avoid flood-like situation."

A statement issued by the East Delhi district administration said quick response teams have been pressed into service who are making announcements for people to evacuate the low-lying areas and take precautions.

Incessant rains over the past two days in and around Delhi caused water logging, resulting in traffic congestion.
