ALGIERS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Algeria's production of dates hit 1.05 million tons in 2017, with a total value of 332.4 billion dinars (2.82 million U.S. dollars), according to figures by the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday.

The figures showed that Algeria produced more than 500,000 tons of high-quality dates, known as "Deglet Noor," which were destined to exportation.

Algerian palms also produced over 200,000 tons of dried dates and "White Deglet Noor" dates, in addition to over 200,000 tons of date paste and soft dates, the ministry said.

The palm area in Algeria is concentrated in the desert, covering around 167,663 hectares.

The province of Biskra, 600 km southeast of Algiers, is still on the top of 16 pilot productive areas in the country, followed by the province of El Oued, near the border with Tunisia.
