HARARE, July 31 (Xinhua) -- According to the result so far announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Tuesday night, the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party has won 36 of the 48 National Assembly seats announced.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) alliance has garnered 11 seats and the National Patriotic Front (NPF) has won one.

ZEC said it would continue to announce more results Wednesday morning as the result of 162 seats out of a total of 210 National Assembly seats has yet to be declared.

But the result of the presidential segment of the poll, in which incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa are the main contenders, will only be announced when counting throughout the country is completed, ZEC said.

Under the law, ZEC should declare all the election results no later than Saturday.

A total of 5.6 million Zimbabweans were registered to choose their president, National Assembly members and councilors on Monday in the first election since former President Robert Mugabe was removed from his position last year.
