RABAT, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle 480 kg of cannabis from the northern city of Tangier to Europe, the Moroccan police said in a statement on Saturday.

The banned substance was seized inside a truck carrying vegetables at Port of Tangier, the statement said.

The truck driver was arrested in the operation, it added.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis farming in the last decade, Morocco remains the world's largest cannabis resin harvester.

According to the 2016 report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Morocco ranked first among 129 cannabis-producing countries from 2009 to 2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan.
