KAMPALA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) men's team defeated Rwanda's Gisagara 3-2 to win the KAVC Invitational Volleyball Open Championship.

After losing the first two sets 18-25, 13-25, the home side battled back to win 25-20, 25-16, 17-15 in a hotly contested men's final in Uganda's capital Kampala on Sunday night.

"We started slow but managed to put our game together and win in front of our fans. It is a good feeling to win this title because we failed to win it last year," KAVC's Daudi Okello, who was voted Most Valuable Player, told Xinhua.

The women's finals was an all-Ugandan affair, as Ndejje University Elites bested Nkumba University 3-1.

Ndejje won the first two sets 25-18, 25-13 before Nkumba fought back to win the third 26-24. Ndejje then finished off the final with a decisive 25-17 victory.

Several Ndejje players also took the individual accolades, as Shamim Nalukabwe was voted Most Valuable Player, Veronica Aanyu took Best Receiver and Jesca Kaidu was named Best Setter.

"We thank all the teams that traveled to Uganda to grace this annual championship. To the Ugandan teams that won the titles, well done," said Hadija Namanda, president of Uganda Volleyball Federation, after the conclusion of the championship.

The international tournament attracted teams from Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. Teams from Kenya and South Sudan who had indicated they would attend failed to show up.
