BERLIN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- German job vacancies hit a new record in the second quarter of the year, the official institute for employment research IAB reported on Tuesday.

The number of job vacancies rose to around 1.21 million in the April-June period, up by 25,000 on the previous quarter and by 115,000 compared to the same period of the last year, the Nuremberg-based institute said in a statement.

Meanwhile, there is a big difference between the West and East Germany. Around 94,000 jobs were available in the West in the second quarter, while over 270,000 jobs were available in the East.

"For many companies in East Germany, it is not easy to offer a competitive wage level," labour market expert Alexander Kubis with IAB noted.

IAB makes the survey four times each year. The results of the second quarter were based on responses from nearly 9,000 firms operating across diverse sectors of the economy.
