TRIPOLI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to Libya Choi Sung-soo said on Wednesday that the war vessel sent to the country aimed to provide humanitarian assistance to the kidnapped ROK engineer and other ROK people in Libya.

The ambassador made his remarks during a meeting with the UN-backed Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Abdussalam Kajman in the capital Tripoli.

"The South Korean ambassador expressed his country's concern in the situation of the abductees, including the Korean engineer," said a statement issued by the information and communication office of the prime minister.

Earlier in June, gunmen attacked a government water supply project side in southwestern Libya and kidnapped three Filipinos and a ROK engineer.

Kajman said efforts are being made to release the kidnapped workers safely, stressing Libya's keenness to maintain friendly relations with ROK.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's government, Libya has suffered escalating violence and insecurity, as well as political division.

Kidnapping is common in Libya, where gunmen abduct foreign workers, local officials and ordinary citizens, usually for ransom.
