Tokyo stocks close lower ahead of U.S-Japan trade talks

TOKYO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as investors refrained from making bold moves ahead of potentially thorny trade talks between Tokyo and Washington.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 45.92 points, or 0.20 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 22,598.39.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 4.55 points, or 0.26 percent, to finish at 1,740.16.

By the close of play, construction, oil and coal product, and nonferrous metal-linked issues comprised those that declined the most, and falling issues beat rising ones by 1,157 to 849 on the First Section, while 98 ended the day unchanged.

On the main section on Thursday, 1,310.09 million shares changed hands, dropping from Wednesday's volume of 1,449.82 million shares and the turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week came to 2,183.3 billion yen (19.64 billion U.S. dollars).
