NAIROBI, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's netball team is seeking to qualify for the World Cup for the first time when they play in the African Netball Championship in Lusaka, Zambia.

Kenya's head coach Jamia Ali is optimistic that Kenya will carve a niche for themselves as they make their first appearance at the continental championship.

"I want to be part of history as a coach who helped Kenya make it to its first ever World Cup," he said on Thursday in Nairobi.

Seven teams have expressed interest in competing in the six-day tournament in the Zambian capital running from Aug. 13-18.

Kenya will be making their debut in the competition, which has also attracted Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Uganda, Zimbabwe and the hosts Zambia.

Namibia and South Africa have already sealed their tickets to the World Cup, owing to their top ranking globally.

However, Malawi will be using the championship to gauge their preparedness while South Africa have opted to give the event a bye.

The tournament will be held from July 12-21 in Liverpool, England.
