Afghan Taliban attack on Ghazni city claims 16 lives, attack repulsed

GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people have been confirmed dead and 33 others sustained injures as Taliban militants launched massive offensive on Ghazni city the capital of eastern Ghazni province early Friday.

The clash, according to provincial police chief Farid Ahmad Mashal erupted early Friday morning after hundreds of Taliban insurgents stormed important government entities including police department, national directorate for security and provincial governor's office.

"Up to 16 dead bodies including 14 in uniform and two civilians as well as 33 injured people including eight civilians have been taken hospital," head of provincial hospital in Ghazni city Baz Mohammad Humat told Xinhua.

Meantime, provincial police chief, without mentioning the possible casualties on either side said that the militants had retreated from their positions and operations are underway to wipe out militants from in and around the city.

Taliban militants have yet to make comment on the situation.
