MEXICO CITY, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Most of the indigenous population in Mexico City endures precarious living conditions and have difficulty accessing health and educational services or well-paid jobs among other basic social rights, a report warned.

The Report on the Indigenous Population of Mexico City was based on a study starting in 2014 with an aim to learn about indigenous communities in Mexico's capital city, said the city's government on Saturday.

Mexico City has been called the "Indigenous Capital" after the study found that around 1 million of its inhabitants consider themselves to be indigenous, it said.

Prior to the study, "the indigenous populations of the capital were invisible," local officials said.

According to the report, Mexico City has a total population of 8.8 million. 57 of the 68 original languages of Mexico are spoken there, with Nahuatl being the most common.

Mexico has a population of over 120 million and its official language is Spanish. Some indigenous languages are still being spoken by some 5 percent of its population and reportedly recognized as "national languages".

Data from the Mexican government released this year showed that there are around 12 million indigenous people belonging to 68 ethnic groups in Mexico.

On Thursday, the country's National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy said that approximately 8.3 million indigenous people live in poverty and have fewer opportunities than the rest of the Mexican population.

Authorities must strengthen measures to offer a more equal society for indigenous people, said the council.
