NEW DELHI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed in rain-related incidents in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, officials said Sunday.

The deaths were reported from the districts of Basti, Kannauj and Muzaffarnagar.

"Three persons died in Basti Sunday, while another died in Kannauj. One person had died in Muzaffarnagar Saturday," the Relief Commissioner's Office said in a statement.

According to a disaster management official, National Disaster Relief Force personnel have been deployed in the flood-affected areas for relief and rescue operations.

The weather department has predicted more rains in the next 48 hours. "Heavy showers are expected in various parts of the state in the next two days," a weather official said.

Earlier this month, nearly 60 people reportedly died in rain-related incidents in the state.

Most of the deaths occurred due to house or wall collapses because of heavy showers while a few were killed by electrocution or drowning.
