TIRINKOT, Afghanistan, Aug.14 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 Taliban militants were killed and 18 others wounded following an Afghan army's military operation in the country's southern province of Uruzgan, an official said Tuesday.

The operation was launched on the outskirts of provincial capital Trinkot, and neighboring Khas Uruzgan district on Monday, leaving 10 militants loyal to the Taliban dead and 18 others injured, Maj. Yahya Alavi, spokesman of army Corps 205 Attal based in the region told Xinhua.

The operation aimed in disrupting insurgents' activities in the province and the military raids will continue until insurgents renounce violence and join government-initiated peace and reconciliation process, the official added.

The violence has been on the rise as Afghan security forces struggle against a surge in attacks by anti-government fighters since the drawdown of foreign forces within the past three years.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than 17 years, has yet to make comments.
