3 killed, over 45 injured in Independence Day celebratory firing, fireworks in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and over 45 others wounded in different incidents of aerial firing and firework displays during the celebrations of Independence Day in various cities of Pakistan between Monday night and Tuesday, local Urdu TV channels reported.

According to police in the country's southern port city of Karachi, a 22-year-old man was killed after being struck by a firecracker in Nazimabad area of Karachi, the provincial capital of southern Sindh province.

Also, aerial firing in various areas of the city claimed a life while more than 35 others sustain injuries as the nation celebrated Independence Day. Authorities told local media that various hospitals in the city treated people who got injured in the aerial firing and shooting of crackers on the occasion.

On the other hand, a youth was killed while eight other people including a 15-year-old girl were injured in various incidents of aerial firing in different parts of Rawalpindi, the sister city of the country's capital Islamabad.

Similarly, at least two people were wounded in aerial firing in Pakistan's eastern Faisalabad city during Independence Day celebrations.

The practice of celebrating the special occasions and events with aerial gunfire and firework displays is common in Pakistan, which claims a number of precious lives each year, said media reports.

People in Pakistan are celebrating the 71st Independence Day with traditional zeal and fervor. The day dawned with 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salute in all four provincial capitals to mark the Independence Day.
