TRIPOLI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Mellitah Oil & Gas company announced on Thursday that one of its gas stations in western Libya exploded in a sabotage attack.

"Station No. 15, located along the gas pipeline linking Mellitah and Al-Wafa (gas) fields, has been subjected to sabotage," the company said in a statement.

The company said that "an explosive device was planted in the station and it was set on fire," but emergency and firefighting teams managed to extinguish the fire.

Other unexploded shells were also found in the station, it said, without disclosing who was responsible for the attack.

The Mellitah oil and gas complex, established in 2008, is run jointly by the Libyan state-owned National Oil Corporation and Italy's company Eni.

The complex is connected to a gas pipeline extending 450 km across the Mediterranean to Italian Sicily, which provides Italy and other European countries with 8 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
