SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- An Indian army trooper was killed Friday in an ongoing fierce gunfight with militants in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight broke out in Kralgund area of frontier Kupwara district, about 85 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"An army trooper was killed today in an ongoing anti-militancy operation in Kralgund-Handwara here," a police official posted in Kupwara said. "The operation in the area was launched on the basis of specific information about the presence of militants."

Four Indian army troopers were wounded on Thursday in a separate gunfight in Nowgam sector of the district while foiling an infiltration bid.

Meanwhile, another gunfight broke out on Friday in Hajin area of Bandipora district, north of Srinagar.

"Gunfight is underway and details are awaited," a police official posted in Bandipora said.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
