ISLAMABAD, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani parliament started special session Friday afternoon to elect the country's new prime minister.
Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, and President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Shehbaz Sharif, are in the run.
Speaker of National Assembly, or lower house of the parliament, Asad Qaiser, who is presiding over the session, will announce the results after the counting is completed.
PTI, or Justice Moverment, emerged as the single largest party in the July 25 elections and its spokesman says the party enjoys the required majority in the National Assembly to get its candidate elected.
PTI's candidates for the office of the parliament speaker and deputy speaker were elected on Wednesday, defeating rivals of the joint opposition.
