JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- A shallow earthquake measuring 7.0 magnitude rocked Lombok island in central Indonesia on Sunday evening, but no tsunami alert was issued, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake struck at 21:56 p.m. local time (1456 GMT) with an epicenter 30 km northeast East Lombok district of West Nusa Tenggara province and a depth of 10 km, Indra Rahma from the agency said.

"This quake is an aftershock of the 7.0-magnitude one that rattled Lombok island on Aug. 5. But this one did not potentially trigger a tsunami," he told Xinhua. The earthquake was measured by the U. S. Geological Survey as 6.9-magnitude.

Earlier in the day, a 6.5-magnitude quake hit the island, leaving 1 person dead and dozens of houses and building damaged, according to spokesman of the national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone of "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
