LOS ANGELES, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The local authority confirmed Sunday that two people were killed after a home-build plane crashed in southwestern U.S. state of Arizona.

According to Fox 10 news channel, the local sheriff's office received a call Saturday evening from the pilot's family, saying they could not reach 68-year-old Glenn Tenniswood, who said earlier he was taking a friend out for a short flight.

Investigators then obtained GPS coordinates through a cell phone belonging to another occupant on the plane, Ron Walker, 78, and then located the plane at night in rugged terrain.

The police accessed the site early Sunday morning and found the pair dead in the incident, the report said. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is on the scene investigating the crash.

Local aircraft towers had no record of the plane in the air, but the Federal Aviation Administration has identified the plane as an experimental Pietenpol Air Camper model.

The Pietenpol Air Camper is a simple parasol wing home-built aircraft first flown in 1928.
