Austria sees 7.5 pct increase in naturalizations during 1H

VIENNA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Naturalizations in Austria have seen a 7.5 percent year-over-year increase in the first half of the year to reach 5,045 new citizens, Statistics Austria revealed on Monday.

The statistics office said the figures represent a trend of increasing naturalizations since the year 2011.

About 35 percent of the new Austrians were born in the country, and a similar percentage were under the age of 18.

The largest proportion was made up of people who originally came from Bosnia and Herzegovina with 577 naturalizations, about 11 percent of the total.

These were followed by Turks (459), Kosovars (319), Serbs (316), and Macedonians (271).

In addition it was noted that 1,090 citizenships were granted to persons from other EU member states, with Romanians (256), Croats (152), and Hungarians (138) making up the largest numbers here.
