HARARE, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Zimbabwean Constitutional Court will on Friday afternoon deliver judgement in an election petition filed by opposition leader Nelson Chamisa challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory in the July 30 presidential election.

Mnangagwa, who was declared winner by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission on Aug. 3 and was due to be inaugurated on Aug. 12, now awaits the court's decision to see if he can be inaugurated as president at the weekend or will be subjected to an election re-run.

In his petition which was heard on Aug. 22, Chamisa of the MDC Alliance alleged irregularities by both Mnangagwa and ZEC in the conduct of the elections and urged the court to either declare him the winner or alternatively order a re-run.

Lawyers representing the three parties presented their heads of argument following which Chief Justice Luke Malaba reserved judgement to Friday.

If the court nullifies the result, a re-run will have to be held in 60 days. If the result is upheld, Mnangagwa will most likely be inaugurated on Sunday since the law stipulates that the inauguration has to take place within 48 hours after the ruling.
