1 killed, several missing in boat capsize in India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and several others were reported missing Friday after a boat carrying them capsized in a river in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

According to disaster management officials, 14 people were rescued from the water.

The boat capsized in Ganga River in Bijnor district, about 442 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Today a boat ferrying people capsized in Ganga River here. Fourteen people have been rescued and one body was fished out," sub-district magistrate (SDM) Bijnor told Xinhua over telephone.

"Although it is not clear yet how many people were in the boat but locals say several people are missing."

Reports said over two dozen people were in the boat when it capsized.

Following the accident, local authorities rushed police and rescue teams to the spot to carry out rescue work.

"Rescue operations are underway and I am on the spot overseeing them," the SDM said.

Officials said the reason behind the boat capsize was being ascertained.

Boat capsizing tragedies are common in India, mainly because of overloading.
