8 killed in road accident in India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and eight others injured Friday after a vehicle carrying them was hit by a cargo vehicle in southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place at Penukonda Mandal of Anantapur district, about 525 km southwest of Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

"In a tragic road accident today eight people were killed and eight others injured after their vehicle was hit by a cargo vehicle here," a police official posted in Anantpur district said. "Six people were killed on the spot while as two others succumbed to injuries in hospital."

The victims according to police were heading to attend a marriage.

Following the accident, police teams rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work. The injured had been admitted at a hospital in Penukonda.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
