FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants have forced 600 families in Arghanj Khaw district of Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province to leave their houses, a member of Provincial Council, Farahnaz Pamiri said Sunday.

"Taliban insurgents in a new tactic to expand their influence and terrorize people in Badakhshan, have forced 600 families in Arghanj Khaw district to leave their houses," Pamiri told Xinhua.

The displaced families, according to the official, have migrated to the neighboring districts and the provincial capital Faizabad.

Only 250 families of the displaced people have taken refuge in Shegnan district, Pamiri said, adding all the forcibly displaced families have been living in misery.

Confirming the forced displacement of families by the Taliban, head of the refugees department in Badakhshan province, Abdul Wahid Tayebi said that efforts are underway to supply humanitarian assistance to the displaced families.

Taliban militants who are in control of parts of Badakhshan province are yet to make comment.
