TRIPOLI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- An airstrike on Tuesday killed an Islamic State (IS) leader in the Libyan city of Bani Walid, some 180 km southwest of the capital Tripoli, a local security source said.

"An unidentified warplane at noon targeted a Toyota vehicle driven by an IS leader called Walid al-Warfalli," a source of the joint security chamber of Bani Walid told Xinhua.

The source said the airstrike was likely carried out by a U.S. warplane "due to the accuracy of the strike that only destroyed the vehicle."

Al-Warfalli was an IS leader in the city of Sirte, some 500 kilometers east of Tripoli, which was under IS control before being recaptured by the government forces two years ago.

"Al-Warfalli is wanted by the Attorney General. An international arrest warrant was issued against him for involvement in terrorists acts," the source said.

The government has not commented on the airstrike.

The U.S. Africa Command in June claimed responsibility for an airstrike that killed four IS leaders in Bani Walid, saying the airstrike was precise and was carried out in coordination with the Libyan Government.
