NEW DELHI, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and two others injured after a car ploughed into a group of homeless laborers on a pavement in western Indian state of Rajasthan, police said Friday.

The accident occurred in state capital Jaipur.

"The car ran over the laborers sleeping on the pavement under a flyover in the city late Thursday night. While two persons died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, where their condition is said to be serious," a police official said.

The driver of the car has been arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving, he said, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
