PARIS, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron will name a new minister who is to take charge the ecology portfolio by Tuesday, replacing Nicolas Hulot who resigned earlier this week, government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux announced Friday.

Hulot stepped down saying he believed he was not able to meet climate targets, Griveaux announced on Friday.

"The President of the Republic has indicated that the government will be complete by Tuesday...the reshuffle will take place by Tuesday," Griveaux told reporters.

"The cabinet meeting will be held Wednesday," he added at a weekly briefing.

It's not clear whether Macron would name only a minister to replace Nicolas Hulot, who according to the country's pollsters has been the most popular face of his government, or announce a major reshuffle to inject dynamism and assuage public anger.

Earlier this week, Hulot announced his surprise resignation during a radio interview. He cited an "accumulation of disappointments" over the government's environment policy and "few steps" taken to tackle climate change and address environmental problems.

Griveaux said about the resignation: "What has been a personal choice must not tarnish what has been done collectively. We will continue what has been done on this issue. We will not give up anything for this important subject, for our country and planet."
