ABUJA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday announced new cooperation plans with Nigeria as the two countries work to shore up bilateral relations.

Merkel, in a joint press conference with Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, said Germany was willing to deepen agricultural cooperation with the West African nation.

Speaking at the press conference marking the end of her day-long official visit to the Nigerian capital, she said Germany would also provide educational assistance that would increase the number of Nigerian students studying in her country.

Merkel's visit to Nigeria is the final leg of a three-day diplomatic mission to three West African states including Senegal and Ghana.

The German leader was accompanied to Nigeria by an economic delegation.
