Burundi's president appoints members of electoral commission

BUJUMBURA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has appointed the seven members of the new National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) who had been approved by the country's parliament.

According to a presidential decree published on Saturday, Pierre Claver Kazihise has been appointed chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) while Annonciate Niyonkuru, who was the vice-chairperson of the outgoing CENI, has been again appointed the CENI vice-chairperson.

Nkurunziza appointed Philippe Nzobonariba as the CENI communication officer and Serges Ndayiragije will be in charge of finance and administration while Jean Anastase Hicuburundi will be in charge of electoral computerization and equipment maintenance.

Hyacinthe Niyonzima will be in charge of legal and electoral cases and Marguerite Kamana will be in charge of logistics.

On Wednesday, the two chambers of the Burundian parliament - the National Assembly and the Senate - approved seven candidates to the new National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) in two separate sessions held in the capital Bujumbura.

Three among the seven members of the CENI are women and the remaining four others are men, and three of the seven CENI members are Tutsis while the four others are Hutus.

The term of the outgoing electoral commission is expiring on Sept. 5.
