NEW DELHI, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- As many as 16 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said Sunday.

The deaths were reported from the state's 16 districts in the past 24 hours.

"So far, 16 people have died due to heavy rains and flooding in the state, with the worst affected being Shahjahanpur district where six people have lost their lives," a disaster management official said.

Apart from the disaster relief force, the Indian Air Force has pressed into service a few choppers from the Gwalior air base for rescue work in the state.

The weather department has predicted more showers in the next 24 hours in parts of the state.

Uttar Pradesh is not the only Indian state affected by monsoon this year. Over 400 people died in heavy rains in the southern state of Kerala this monsoon season.
