5.5-magnitude quake hits NE India's state, no damage reported

NEW DELHI, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake hit India's northeastern state of Assam on Wednesday, officials said.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the quake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 10:20 a.m. local time in Kokrajhar district, about 233 km west of Dispur, the capital city of Assam.

"The epicenter of earthquake was located at 26.4 degrees north latitude and 90.1 degrees east longitude," information released by Indian Meteorological Department said. "The depth of the earthquake was 13 km."

Officials said tremors of the earthquake were felt across the state.

Locals said they rushed out of their houses in fear.

"I was working in kitchen and suddenly I felt everything was shaking," a local resident called Bonita told Xinhua over telephone. "Immediately I alerted everyone and all of us assembled in the compound outside."

However, there were no immediate reports of any damage or loss of lives in the earthquake.
