NEW DELHI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A court in the Indian capital has summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a case of assault on the topmost bureaucrat by his party lawmakers.
The alleged assault on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash took place in February.
According to police, the chief secretary was assaulted by some 11 lawmakers of Aam Aadmi Party in the presence of Kejriwal when he had gone to the Chief Minister's residence for a late night meeting on government business.
"Delhi Police probing the assault case has now submitted a 3,000-page charge sheet in the court, which has asked Kejriwal to appear in person on Oct. 25. Police have held Kejriwal, his deputy and 11 lawmakers of his party responsible for the assault," a lawyer said Tuesday.
Charges of illegal confinement, criminal intimidation, assaulting a public servant and criminal conspiracy have been slapped on the Delhi chief minister and his lawmakers by the police in its charge sheet, the lawyer added.
If convicted, Kejriwal and his lawmakers can get up to seven years in jail.
The former civil servant-turned-politician's Aam Aadmi Party has, however, refuted the allegations of assault on the chief secretary and called the police charge sheet as "fake and laughable," accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government of victimizing its lawmakers.
