MADRID, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish National Police force on Tuesday confirmed they have broken up a network dedicated to smuggling hashish into Spain from Morocco and distributing it throughout the country.

The National Police said the operation led to seven arrests, including five Moroccans and two Spaniards, as well as the discovery of two drug warehouses, the seizure of two vehicles, 900 kg of hashish, an electric pistol and 1,000 euros in cash.

The police explained that the network was able to bring the hashish into the port of Algeciras, in Southwest Spain, and from there it was distributed to places such as the Basque Region, in northern Spain, Catalonia, in the northeast and Valencia in the east.

The operation is the result of an investigation which began in January.

Spain's geographical situation at the southwest corner of Europe, which is close to the northern coast of Morocco, makes it the main entry point into Europe for hashish from the North African country.
