MADRID, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- One person was confirmed dead and at least 11 others were injured on Tuesday as the result of the partial collapse of renovation works at the Hotel Ritz in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Emergency services confirmed the death and explained that four of the injured are in serious conditions, with the most seriously injured taken to a nearby hospital.

The Spanish media reported that some of the injured were treated on the street directly outside of the hotel.

Reports state that part of the structure of sixth floor on the inside of the hotel collapsed at around 16:10 local time as renovation work continued on the building.

The area in the center of Madrid has been cordoned off, with emergency services including fire engines and six ambulances on the scene.

Meanwhile, the company behind the renovation work, SanJose Constructora, announced it has opened an investigation.

The renovation work at the Ritz began in February and was due to be completed before the end of 2019.
