LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles City Council voted at a special meeting on Tuesday to prohibit manufacturing and sale of fur products in the second-most populous city of the United States.

The proposal, which was raised by two councilmen Pau Koretz and Bob Blumenfield, was approved on a 12-0 vote with three absences.

The city attorney's office will draft an ordinance based on the proposal. If the ordinance is ultimately approved by the City Council and signed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, it will become law and a two-year phase-in period set in the proposal will begin.

"Today the city council has a choice to make, to step up and tell the world that we will no longer tolerate the arcane and inhumane practice of the fur trade," said Blumenfield at the news conference before the meeting.

Joanna Krupa, Maggie Q and other celebrities also attended the news conference, hoping that Los Angeles would be an example for the rest of the country and the rest of the world.

Three cities in California have banned fur, including San Francisco, Berkeley and West Hollywood. The ban in San Francisco will take effect on Jan. 1, 2019 but allows furriers and other retailers to sell current inventory until Jan. 1, 2020.
