NEW DELHI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- As many as 1,000 farmers from western Indian state of Gujarat have urged Japan not to release funds for the ambitious Bullet train project in India.
In a letter to the Japan International Cooperation Agency, these farmers whose land are to be acquired by the Indian government for laying down Bullet train tracks have alleged violation of its guidelines for the project, local media reported.
These affected farmers have also approached the Gujarat High Court, challenging the project, according to reports.
"They have also sought an appointment with Japan's Ambassador to India. The letter invited the Japanese Ambassador to Gujarat for understanding the farmers' plight," lawyer for farmers, Anand Yagnik, was quoted as saying.
The Bullet train project was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in September 2017.
The high-speed rail corridor is an under-construction high-speed rail line connecting the cities of Ahmedabad in Gujarat and India's financial capital Mumbai. It will be India's first high-speed rail line.
