Taliban attack kills 1 police, wounds 6 others in N. Afghanistan

FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least one police personnel lost his life and six others sustained injuries after a group of Taliban militants stormed a security checkpoint in Shahr-e-Bazarg district of Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province on Sunday, provincial police spokesman Sanahullah Rohani said.

According to the official, a group of Taliban militants stormed a checkpoint in Dawing area of Shahr-e-Bazarg district in the early hours of Sunday and police returned fire that lasted for a while during which one police constable was killed and six others injured.

Several Taliban militants were also killed and injured in the firefight, the official said, but did not give the exact number.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Majahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in contact with media has confirmed the fighting and claimed the militants had overrun a security checkpoint after inflicting casualties on police personnel.
