ALGIERS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of the Algerian National People's Assembly (lower house of parliament) Said Bouhadja on Tuesday suspended his activities amid protest which called him to resign, APS news agency reported.

Bouhadja canceled all parliamentary diplomacy activities scheduled in his agenda, without specifying when he will resume work or whether he will resign, the report quoted sources in the parliament as saying.

On Monday, heads of five parliamentary groups at the lower house of parliament decided to freeze all activities of the assembly structures until Speaker of the Parliament Said Bouhadja resigns.

The five parliamentary groups are consisted of the ruling parties the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Democratic Rally (RND), in addition to some pro-regime parties and independent MPs.

They denounced what they called "overruns and violations" observed in the legislative institution, namely "intentional postponement of the adoption of the assembly's statutes, marginalization of the members of the Judicial Committee, mismanagement of the assembly's affairs, exaggerated expenses disbursed illegally, and dubious recruitment."
