MADRID, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Supreme Court on Wednesday maintained the prison sentence of four and a half years for former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Rodrigo Rato for misusing company credit cards when he served as chairman of Spanish bank Bankia.

It kept the sentence originally handed to Rato and 63 other former Bankia directors by the National High Court on February 23, 2017 for the misuse of the credit cards with which they spent a total of 12.5 million euros (14. 4 million U.S. dollars) from 2003 to 2012.

The Supreme Court agreed with the National High Court's original findings that the money spent by using the cards was not reflected in the contracts the accused had with Bankia and did not appear in their tax declarations.

Rato is expected to serve his sentence in the coming days.
