Former Russian deputy prime minister Dvorkovich elected new FIDE president

BATUMI, Georgia, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The World Chess Federation (FIDE) on Wednesday elected Arkady Dvorkovich, former deputy prime minister of Russia, as its new president.

The election was held at the end of the FIDE 89th congress in Georgia's Black Sea city Batumi, where the Chess Olympiad 2018 is going on.

During the election, Dvorkovich got 103 votes, beating his main opponent, Deputy President of the organization Georgios Makropoulos from Greece, who took 78 votes.

The 46-year-old Dvorkovich, a Russian economist, was Russian President's Assistant from May 13, 2008 to May 21, 2012. He was also the Director of the Organizing Committee of Football World Championship in Russia this summer.

The 43rd Chess Olympiad kicked off in Batumi on Sept. 23, and will end on Oct 5.
