YAOUNDE, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A group of armed separatist forces was intercepted early Sunday as it tried to burn polling stations in Bafut, a locality in crisis-hit English-speaking region of Northwest as voting in the country's presidential election begins, the Cameroon army said on Sunday.
"The soldiers are in pursuit of the fugitives," the army said in a statement.
Three hunting rifles and two spray pumps full of gasoline to be used to burn the polling stations have been seized, the statement said.
Over 6,500,000 people are voting in Sunday's race as tension continues to grow in the two English-speaking regions of Southwest and Northwest where armed separatists are fighting to create a new nation called "Ambazonia."
The separatists have vowed to stop the vote from taking place in the regions.
