VIENNA, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Wednesday called for amendments to a planned migration pact of the United Nations (UN), citing a wish to maintain sovereignty, the Krone reported.

The pact, titled "Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration" saw its final draft put together in July, and is to be signed and adopted in December.

Speaking at a press conference after cabinet, Kurz said Austria will not accept certain points in the pact, and "will not change laws because of it."

He said his government wishes to align itself with other countries who question aspects of the pact such as Switzerland, in the hope that necessary changes could be made.

The migration issue is closely tied with "sovereignty and self-determination," he added, and said it is an area where Austria should be able to continue to make its own decisions.

Neighboring Hungary has already said it will not sign the agreement, while Poland is also mulling over a similar course of action.
