RABAT, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan navy rescued 86 new migrants on Wednesday off the northern city of Larache, Morocco's army said.

The boat carrying the migrants was running into trouble when the Moroccan navy intervened to provide assistance, the army said.

The boat lost its direction since Sunday, the same source said, noting that all the migrants were Moroccan nationals.

All the migrants were brought safely to the Port of Larache, it added.

Moroccan navy has rescued a total of 1,067 migrants since last weekend.

In recent months, Morocco has been witnessing a significant hike in illegal immigration attempts.

Morocco thwarted at least 54,000 attempts to smuggle illegal immigrants into Europe in the first eight months of 2018, compared with 39,000 attempts a year earlier, the Moroccan government said.
