KIEV, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian government forces said on Thursday that they suffered the heaviest casualties since the ceasefire between the government forces and the pro-independence armed groups in late August.

Two government soldiers were killed and three others injured in the hostilities, while two servicemen died after stepping on a landmine, the press service of the Joint Forces Operation said on Facebook.

The Ukrainian army positions were attacked 28 times on the previous day, it said.

The conflict between government troops and pro-independence armed groups has been raging in eastern Ukraine since April 2014, claiming about 10,000 lives.

On Aug. 29, the two sides declared a fresh ceasefire to ensure children's security ahead of the new school year.
