YAOUNDE, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Cameroon's Constitutional Council will on October 16 begin hearing petitions from some opposition candidates and voters demanding the nullification of the October 7 presidential poll, said Secretary General of the institution Malego Joseph Asse on Sunday in a statement.

Hearings will begin at 11:00 am local time in the capital, Yaounde, Asse said.

According to the Cameroonian electoral body, Elections Cameroon (Elecam) 25 petitions have been filed by voters and candidates asking for the election to be either partially or totally annulled.

Presidential candidates including Joshua Osih from the leading opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF), Maurice Kamto from the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), and Cabral Libii from the UNIVERS, decry among other things "irregularities" and "disregard of electoral law" that their team observed during the polling.

According to Cameroon Electoral Code, the Constitutional Council is expected to proclaim the final results of the election by October 22.

On Friday, Elecam chairperson, Enow Abrams Egbe called on the candidates to remain calm as the country awaits the final results of the election.

"We therefore exhort all candidates to demonstrate maximum restraint and wait for the proclamation of the results." Egbe said.
