SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of information and telecommunications technology (ICT) product hit a record monthly high last month due to solid demand for locally-made semiconductors, a government report showed Wednesday.

The ICT export increased 5.3 percent over the year to 20.27 billion U.S. dollars in September, topping the previous high of 20.19 billion U.S. dollars tallied in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The record export was mainly attributed to strong demand for chips, of which shipment jumped 26.9 percent to a new monthly high of 12.54 billion U.S. dollars.

Export for computer and peripherals gained 4.1 percent from a year earlier to 990 million U.S. dollars in September.

Mobile phone shipment tumbled 36.6 percent to 1.16 billion U.S. dollars amid stiffer competition in the global market.

The ICT export to China, South Korea's biggest trading partner, expanded 16.6 percent over the year to 11.62 billion U.S. dollars in September, marking the highest figure. The figure to the European Union advanced 13.1 percent to 1 billion U.S. dollars.

The ICT import reduced 11.7 percent to 7.98 billion U.S. dollars, sending the ICT trade surplus to a fresh high of 12.29 billion U.S. dollars in September.
